Performance Activity #1 (2nd Quarter)- Reflection Paper about the Episode "National anthem" in Black Mirror

The episode "National Anthem" in the series Black Mirror in my opinion is a brilliant eye-opener that portrayed and revealed what is currently wrong and negative in this modern society. The story, although quite distressing is a nice combination of action, thriller and mystery that the audience would dare watch until the end, no matter how frustrating the ending might be. The episode in general, is a daring take on the power of social networking.

With regards to the story itself, if I am in the shoes of the Prime Minister of having to choose whether to have an intercourse with a pig or not to save the princess, I will do what he did. It is a matter of life and death so it is an obvious choice though it will be hard for me. However, what will make the difference is what will I do after. Will I keep myself in the dark or go on and continue my job as the Prime Minister? I will try my best to do the letter and perhaps become a beacon of courage to the people.

After watching the episode with connection to today's modern technology, I can say that the magic of technology has influenced us all positively and negatively. As we all know, the modern age has provided us with several innovations that eased man's work and has helped us connect with everyone around the world. However, there are always two sides to a coin. With today's social world, everything that is posted on social networking sites, no matter if it's true or not, if it is eye-catching and can create a national buzz, it will easily spread.

The episode also shows how social media and internet influences news media. Before the newsrooms can verify the unbelievable story they have been handed and before they can take the time to determine whether reporting on the story immediately will result in unnecessary harm to the PM, the public, or the princess, social media and the internet forces their hand.  Because people are talking about it on the Internet is is deemed newsworthy, and the cable news networks trip over themselves to avoid being the last ones reporting an absurd story they cannot confirm.
